Potala Palace

Potala Palace

Jump feet first into discovering Tibet on your first stop to Potala Palace. This magnificent property was the former winter home of the Dalai Lama. It is made up of various halls and chapels and even includes the tomb of the 13th Dalai Lama. The religious still come to this place to pay their respects, a very inspiring scene to witness. Be sure to wear your walking shoes in order to climb up and down the many stairways.

Your guide will then take you to Jokhang Temple, also called Qokang Monastery. Smaller than Potala Palace, this temple area is 4 stories and features a distinctive golden roof. For some Tibetans, this is the most significant and sacred temple in the Tibet region. Be sure to see the about 800 metal statues and thousands of painted scrolls known as thangkas.

After lunch at a local restaurant, take a piece of Tibet back home with you and you will visit Barkhor Street which is an ancient thruway established about 1,300 years ago. Also known as the Pilgrims' Circuit, Barkhor Street is right next to Jokhang Temple. There are large incense burners to help protect the temple area, and many of the shops and restaurants still operate as they have for centuries. Watch local life as the locals and pilgrims live it, coming to this area for more religious purposes than any other. Then, shop for some items at the many stalls or relax in a coffee or tea shop and enjoy the passing parade.

Day 3Lhasa

To start off your 3rd day with us, first go to Drepung Monastery. It is west of Lhasa under Mount Gambo Utse. Constructed in the year 1416, this centuries-old monastery is considered one of the largest principle monasteries of the Gelu Sect in China. Before Potala Palace was built, this was where the living Dalai Lamas lived. Every year, the grand Shonton Festival is held in early August, filling up the Drepung Monastery with crowds of every walk of life.

Another important monastery to see in Lhasa is Sera Monastery to the north. There are 4 main structures to see here, the Great Assembly Hall and 3 colleges. Every day except Monday, at 3pm, there are debates held about Buddhist doctrines among the monks. This is an event not to be missed, but it is imperative to stay quiet as you watch the debates.

Lunch is taken at a local restaurant featuring Tibetan food. Your last stop of the day will be Norbulingka, meaning “jeweled garden.” Originally just a summer palace for the Dalai Lama, it later served the whole government administration, making it a central place for both religious and administrative purposes.
