Itinerary

Day 1Shanghai to Overnight Train by Train No. T164/T165 (Shanghai Railway Station - Lhasa Railway Station) Dep 19:52 - Arr 20:48

The train to Tibet departs at 19: 50 from Shanghai but the famous section on the Qinghai-Tibetan Railway with the stunning and unique natural Tibetan scenery will be a highlight of the journey. Your accommodation for the journey is a soft sleeper which will provide a level of comfort for the two day journey.

Before boarding the train to Lhasa, you will be picked up from your hotel in Shanghai your guide and taken to the railway station. The guide will assist you to board the train. Meals are available on the train we suggest you buy some snacks or food in advance for the train lasting 3 days and 2 nights.

Day 2Overnight train

Passing through several major cities including Wuxi, Nanjing, Bangbu, Xuzhou, Zhengzhou, Xian and Lanzhou, the train arrives from Xining at the Qinghai-Tibetan Railway Station. The next day will be filled with spectacular sightseeing from the viewing windows as the train passes the remarkable landscape.

Day 3Lhasa

This morning the train will pass through Golmud and onto the final stage of your journey to Lhasa. This stage is over some of the most testing terrain on earth and the construction of the railway one of the great engineering feats in recent times. The breathtaking scenery is another great reason for taking this trip. The afternoon brings the train to Nagqu County and its beautiful grassland scenery.

The train will arrive at Lhasa Railway Station about 9.30 pm and your local guide will meet you at the train station to take you to your hotel. Your guide will give you tips to help acclimating to the altitude. It is important to get a good nights sleep to help you body adjust to the altitude.

Day 4Lhasa

Your expert guide will meet you in the hotel lobby to start your tour. The Potala Palace will be the first stop. This is the symbol of Lhasa and is the former winter residence of the Dalai Lama. Your guide will explain the White Palace and the Red Palace and tell stories about them.

Then on to Barkhor Street in downtown Lhasa. The street is a circle. Strolling around, you will see many interesting local handcrafts, Tibetan accessories and souvenirs. Locals wandering around and women in Tibetan dress give this street kind of vitality.

The Tibetan lunch in a local restaurant will provide an insight into real Tibetan food. Jokhang Temple is situated in Barkhor Street. The home of the famous Sakyamuni Buddha brought by Princess Wencheng in the 7th century, this place has become the spiritual soul of Tibet. Pilgrims prostrate in front of the temple to show their devotion.

Day 5Lhasa

Today your sightseeing includes Norbulingka. Known as the Summer Palace in Tibet, this beautiful garden was designed combining both Tibetan and southern Chinese garden styles. It used to be used by the Dalai Lama during summer.

Next on to the Drepung Monastery which was built in 1416 and is one of the largest and most important monasteries in Tibet. It was the residence of the Dalai Lama before the reconstruction of the Potala Palace. The Shoton Festival is the biggest festival in Tibet and is held here every year.

After having lunch in a local restaurant, you will stop by the Sera Monastery located in the northern suburbs of Lhasa. Every afternoon from 15:00-17:00, Tuesday to Sunday, the sutra-debates take place between the young monks.

Day 6Lhasa to Overnight Train by Train No. T166/T163 (Lhasa Railway Station - Shanghai Railway Station) Dep 11:25 - Arr 11:15

After breakfast in your hotel, your guide will escort you to the railway station to catch your train for Shanghai It leaves about 11:30.

The return train follows the same route but you will see sights that you passed at night on your previous trip. Today you will pass Nagqu and Golmud which have great photography opportunities.

Day 7Overnight train

This morning you will see the beautiful Qinghai Lake and pass through Xining on the easterly journey to Shanghai.

Day 8Shanghai

When you arrive at Shanghai Railway Station your shanghai guide will pick you up from the railway station and transfer you to your hotel.

Price Per Person in US Dollars

We use different hotels for different tour classes while the itinerary is the same. Deluxe Class is usually staying at a 5-star hotel, Superior Class at a 4-star hotel and Tourist Class at a 3-star level hotel. The prices for one person are based on sharing twin hotel rooms with another guest. A supplement is necessary if you want to book single rooms. And the prices may rise during national holidays, such as the National Day (September 30th to October 6th) and Chinese New Year (late January or early February)
