There are more than 1,000 bus lines in Shanghai city and about 50 bus lines are being opened, adjusted or lengthened every year.
- Grouped by time, there are daytime buses, the rush hour buses in the morning and afternoon headed with 2 of the license number and the night buses headed with 3.
- Classified by area, there are western pu river area, eastern Pu River area, around the Pu River (bridge and tunnel), and the suburban area.
- Grouped by ticket, there are no-conductor buses with one Yuan ticket (within 13 km) or 1.5yuan ticket (more than 13 km), air-conditioned buses with 2 Yuan ticket and special lined buses with multiple tickets.
The main transit centers in the city are Shanghai Station, People's Square, Xu jiahui area, Zhong shan park and the five-pointed square.

① no-conductor buses.
There are 1 Yuan and 1.5 Yuan tickets. the buses with double digit and three digit numbers which begins with 1 or 2 or 7 are mostly go without conductor. passengers should prepare the changes. people can also buy commutation tickets. the ticket can not return if it is sold.
② diversified-ticket buses:
The special-lined buses with the first number of 5; special-lined buses to the new arrears of Pu Dong; the minibus lines with the first number of 8; the double-layered buses or air-conditioned buses with the first number of 9; many other air-conditioned tourism buses; the sightseeing buses.
