Day 2Lhasa

An ideal first day in Tibet and Lhasa is to visit Potala Palace which is a valuable museum that presents the world with Tibetan history and culture. There are 2 main sections of Potala Palace, the Red Palace and the White Palace. The Red Palace is used for religious study and prayer, and the White Palace was the living quarters of the Dalai Lama. Sitting at a height of 3,700 meters (12,100 feet) on Red Mountain, this palatial complex is one of the most impressive in the world not only because of its history but also the sacred treasures found inside.

Jokhang Temple is your next stop, in many ways considered the most important religious site in Tibet for pilgrims. It has large collections of important Buddhist materials such as 800 metal sculptures, thousands of painted scrolls, murals, and more.

Lunch will be at a local restaurant which serves great tibetan dishes. Visit Barkhor Street afterwards where you will see pilgrims walk around the square with their prayer wheels in a clockwise manner per tradition. People from all over the world now come to Barkhor Street to experience the local culture, drink some tea, buy religious artifacts and relics, and be part of the long history of this site.

Day 3Shigatse

Today we will visit Yamdrok Lake and Palcho Monastery in Shigatse which is 3 hours drive from Lhasa.

Yamdrok Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world and thus hosts the highest power station on earth which powers the region. Many birds also visit annually in their life cycle, resting at the 5 islands and reaping resources from the water. More than anything, journeying to Yamdrok Lake is for appreciating the wonderful scenery and landscapes, contrasted with the calmness of the water and the boldness of the Himalayan peaks and slopes nearby.

Aftewards, continue on to the Palgor Chorten which is unique in architectural style that is distinctively a mixture of Han, Tibetan, and Nepalese flair. See the grand gates, pagodas, Buddha statues, shrines, chapels, towers, and more of this famous monastery.

Lunch will be at a local restaurant en route.

Pilgrims continue to visit Tashilunpo Monastery regularly and this sacred place remains home to some devotees. The outside of the building is bathed in red and white, making it very striking to the eye. Inside, you will find the Maitreya Temple (hosting the world’s largest copper statue of Buddha), the Panchen Lama’s palace, chanting hall, as well as various colleges, courtyards, galleries, chapels, and much more. A local restaurant will be chosen with your guide for lunch which is sure to be typical food of the area.

Day 5Lhasa

Visit Yangpachen today, a town just outside of Lhasa with hot springs that soothe the body and soul. The geothermic heat rising from inside the earth in a land covered by snow makes for a wonderful relaxation session in the countryside. Much of the energy used in Lhasa is harnessed at these springs as well. Otherwise, the small town is also known for its typical people and their lifestyles. On your visit, you will see Tibetan animal herders and nomads. If there is time, you might also stop by Yangpachen Monastery which is well loved by the locals.

After lunch, visit Lake Namtso, the 2nd largest saltwater lake in China. It measures 70 kilometers by 30 kilometers and is deepest at 125 meters (410 feet). The mountaintop lake is home to 5 empty islands which in the past were used for religious ceremonies and pilgrimages. The largest of these islands is 2,100 meters by 800 meters. Many birds like to visit the area annually. Some local people sell their handicrafts here, including typical items such as turquoise, silver, coral, amber, handmade cheese, and more.
