Shanghai Grand View Garden is around 65 km west of the city centre, by Dianshan Lake, and was modelled on Daguanyuan, the exquisite gardens and complex featured in the famous classic novel "A Dream of Red Mansions" (sometimes translated as "Dream of the Red Chamber") written by Cao Xueqin in the 18th century. The novel has been filmed a number of times, and was a popular TV series in 2010.
The gardens include various compounds and pavilions similar to those where characters from the novel used to write poetry, make music or entertain guests, including various lovely courtyards, lodges and towers. Between them are pools, waterways and bridges, long views of landscaped woodlands, flowering trees and formal gardens as well as some intricate small gardens.
Visitors can enjoy boat rides, archery and even hire costumes and pose with wax figures from the novel. A day spent exploring these elegant gardens is delightful in itself, and for lovers of the “Dream of Red Mansions” will be delighted with the way it harks back to that beautiful love story.
